Preparing your people to thrive with SAP S/4HANA

We hear the same story from SAP ECC customers preparing to deploy SAP S/4HANA. First, they remind us that they’ve owned SAP for years, and they have a very capable workforce that can roll with any change SAP sends their way.

Then they ask, “Why should we worry about user adoption now after so many years of using SAP?”

The short answer is, integrating S/4HANA into your business culture will be fundamentally different than any ERP project you have ever done. As you prepare for deployment, here six key differences to consider:

  • SAP S/4HANA implementation cycles are accelerated. Today’s cloud implementation methodologies significantly reduce each of the steps to deployment. While this means you’ll be able to realize expected business outcomes sooner, it also means your functional teams and business users need to get up to speed more quickly than in any previous deployment. As a result, you’ll need to accelerate your training and change management activities.

  • There is less customization, more standardization. Unlike previous deployment approaches that encouraged customization, your system design will reflect industry best practices (including the Model Company if SAP is doing your implementation). Your people will need to let go of custom business processes they’ve gotten used to, which means they’ll need to learn new ways to do their job along with a brand-new system.

  • The user experience is greatly improved ‒ but it’s still new to your users. What everyone’s been telling you about User Interface (UI) improvements with SAP Fiori is true ‒ the user experience with SAP S/4HANA is much better than anything you’ve seen before. But as with any new software, you’ll need to take care of business when it comes to training for user adoption and competence.

  • SAP S/4HANA delivers more information with higher accuracy. This requires new analytical skills. Digital transformation brings a bonanza of data you can use to steer your business in ways that keep you ahead of the competition. This will require your end users to work differently ‒ less “transactionally” and more “analytically.” Users will also require training that provides a wider view of how their actions, and the data from the transactions they execute, impact the work of others downstream in the business.

  • Your people have more training options (and preferences) than ever before. From traditional classroom training, to online learning, in-application help, and YouTube videos, today’s learners have varied learning options in their daily lives. You’ll need to prepare your learning programs that tap in to these and other innovations for the benefit of your people.

  • More than ever, people need to be prepared to adapt quickly to business and technology changes. Disruption is scary. And today it’s coming from every direction with unprecedented speed. People and organizations need to be prepared, nimble, and able to adapt quickly to change.

These are daunting challenges for even the most prepared organizations. SAP Education offers the only integrated approach for preparing people to understand and embrace the changes SAP S/4HANA will bring, and to thrive in the new business environment.
