Production Scheduling Overview
In general, production scheduling is the actual assignment of starting and/or completion dates to operations or groups of operations to show when these must be done if the manufacturing order is to be completed on time.
In a typical production planning scenario, after MRP Run, planned orders are generated, the capacity situation is evaluated and adjusted. How to assign order operations from the initially created production plan to available time slots of capacities? Production scheduling deals with operational decisions at plant, such as the machine production sequence. Its purpose is to transform the short term production plan, utilizing the available resources over a given time horizon into a schedule useful for all operations within a time horizon of a few days.
Business Benefit
SAP S/4HANA Fiori App Schedule Production aims to help production scheduler to schedule resources and dates/times for carrying out operations, taking resource availability into consideration.
With this app, you can select the source of supply (production version) and the pacemaker work centers to dispatch the orders on the dates/shifts that you choose. A pacemaker work center with the capacity duration that meets the capacity required to complete the operation gets highlighted for ease of selection. The app uses midpoint scheduling to adjust the operational time according to the strategy that you have set. You can switch production versions when the work center capacity is insufficient or reschedule orders that are coinciding in a time slot.
Scheduling activities includes,
· Dispatch - dispatch operations to resources at a specific date/time
· Deallocate - remove scheduled operations from the resource schedule
· Reschedule - dispatch already scheduled operations to a different date/time.
How to Get This App?
To your user in the SAP S/4HANA Cloud system, you should have the following roles and catalog assigned.
Business Scenario: How does Production Scheduler use this app?
In this business scenario, Michael is a production scheduler, he will make use of SAP S/4HANA Cloud Fiori App - Schedule Production to get a view of planned/production orders in his responsbile plant, review all the orders dispatched for specific dates, do mass dispatching on order operations. He will check details of source of supply, choose the time slots that have sufficient capacity to dispatch orders, and deallocate orders which has lower priority.

Setting Business Resonsibility
Michael’s responsible plant can be set as personal settings before starting to use the app. To do that, he goes to App Settings.

Within App Settings, Area of Responsibility (e.g. Plants) and Industry Type (e.g. Process or Discrete) can be personalized. In our scenario, Michael is responsible for plant 1710 of discrete industry.

Setting Schedule Strategy
Another important thing before starting his work is to set the schedule strategy.

The Planning Mode controls dispatching orders by Bucket or Sequence. Scheduling Control indicates Finite/Infinite and Find Slot/Insert operation (for Sequence mode) in terms of Finite scheduling. Direction has Backward or Forward options.
In our scenario, Michael is using Bucket mode, Find Slot (Finite), Backward direction as his strategy.
Note:
In Bucket mode, you can view and dispatch the available source of supply on a period of time and shifts.
In Sequence mode, you can view all time slots that are available for the work center in a time continuous format and dispatch orders to sequence. You can filter to view only the slots that have sufficient capacity and dispatch the orders or edit the slots that have overlapping orders.
Dispatch List
As Michael’s daily work, the first thing might be monitoring the dispatch list which shows all of the orders waiting for processing at work centers.
By adapting filters like Horizon, Work Center, Product etc. (more filters can be found by clicking Adapt Filters), he can quickly go to the desired information.

For example, he sets Horizon as 05/04/2020 - 05/15/2020, the order operation items are listed if any date between Operation Start and Opertaion End locates in the Horizon.
Then he can see a list of planned orders/production orders, and order information like product, quantity, requirement date, receipt date, work center, operation capacity required, dispatch status. More information can be displayed by clicking 
button.

From the dispatch list, Michael can do mass dispatch for the non-dispatched orders, or just choose some of them.
He chooses orders 16643 and 16645 to dispatch.

After dispatching, the operation start/end date is automatically adjusted by scheduling strategy which is set by Michael as Bucket mode, Find Slot (Finite) and Backward direction.

Schedule Overview
Besides the list view, Michael can switch to a chart view by clicking 
button. From the chart, he can easily know which operations are overlapped on which pacemaker work center, have a look at operation details if required.

Operation scheduling status are showed in the chart as different figures which can be found from the legend of this App.

Scheduling Details
By clicking the arrow at the right of item line, Michael will see more detail information at operation level, production versions as source of supply are displayed under Available Sources of Supply in the bucket table (given that Planning Mode - Bucket is set in the Setting Schedule Strategy section). Here he can review all the available capacities for each day or shift.
In the following example, the operation requires 10.25 hours, two sources of supply (production version) are available during the operation period.

Now he selects 8.00 H shift on 05/14/2020 to dispatch the operation.
With Backward strategy, it consumes 8 hours of 05/14/2020 Shift and 2.25 hours of 05/13/2020 Shift of production version 0001.

Then he deallocates the source of supply, and switch to Forward strategy, dispatch the same shift again. It consumes 8 hours of 05/14/2020 Shift and 2.25 hours of 05/15/2020 Shift.

In Schedule Production app, Michael saves all the scheduling results. And he can go to Schedule Overview again to review the scheduling status.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why "Schedule Production" App doesn't show the planned order for some materials, or not every work center is showed?
This app considers only bottleneck operations of an order that are identified (based on the production line) in the production version, in which the production line need to be correctly maintained.
To maintain the production line in production version, you can go to Change Material (or Manage Production Version) app, find your production version and assign the work center in the production line field.
