Custom Field for resources at project level

Hi All,

We are trying to add a new field to further identify the resources needed in a project, as with the combination of 'role', 'work item' and 'skill' we do not cover the flexible requirement our customer is seeking for.

Do you know if there is a business context to extend the customs available in this scenario?

Thank you in advance.

Best Regards,

Anna

Hello Ana,

Please use business context - "Engagement Project" for this requirement. Kindly refer image I have added.

After create custom field, you can enable it wherever required in UI and Reports tab and publish the same.

Hi Nadine,

Again, thank you for your support.

The actually requirement is not so much about cost and revenue rates, which is actually quite flexible. The requirement is more about project management. The Key Users miss a field where you can extend the information related to the role which is performing the task. As mentioned in the document, our client does not have a big variety of sales or costs rates. Nearly every project is managed with only two sales service rates, with some extensions which are completely covered. But, when it comes to managing each project, the variety of roles that are managed, and which would help resource management team to assign resource, is more complex.

Our first thought was to use role to differentiate every role, and use skills to add more criteria to help find the right resource for each task; and to use work item to define the actual task that is going to be performed by this resource. However, our first thought here has the 'activity type' limitation, as we can only use 20 roles, and this does not cover the different areas of the company for which we are implementing the solution.

Anyway, as you mentioned, if adding a field is not an option, will try and find a better solution.

Thanks again for your help.

Best Regards,

Anna

Hi Ana,

you cannot add custom fields to the role. Only on project level (header), work package, sales order (billing tab) or sales order item level.

The combinations available in S4HC standard, cover most of our customer requirements, it requires master data maintenance only. You can be very flexible with the cost rates/Prices using the standard. Please refer to another blog I've answered in which I explain this (my latest reply). It contains examples on how you could leverage the standard access sequences to be more flexible.

Would this approach cover your customer's requirements?

Hi Ana

If you could share an example of how you want to define the resources & their rates, may be I can suggest something.

We have faced a similar issue in our organization.

Also, if you could share more specific info on what you are trying to do -

1. Are you trying to create a new role (for planning) OR

2. wanting to assign a named resource (staff) on the above created role

Nitin

Hi Kamal Jain,

Thanks for such a quick response.

We have created multiple fields using the 'engagement project' business context, but these new fields do not seem to be available for each resource line. What we need is to be able to differentiate between assignments, not to add a new field in the project or in the workpackage.

We also tried with 'work package' business context, but with no results on our requirement.

Is it necessary to do something in addition to get to use these fields for each role line?

Thank you again.

Best Regards,

Anna

Note that the Delivery Organization field is also available on the pop-up where you assign the named resources - so you can choose which level resource you want (from the activity type drop down), and which department / Business Unit you want (from the Delivery Organization drop down).

Hope this helps.

We had the similar issue - and this is how we mitigated it.

Hello Anna,

I would suggest usage of the Delivery Organization field in combination with the 20 pre-delivered activity types.

It allows you to multiply the same 20 activities across different work-streams.

For Example: The Delivering Location / Branch & the technology / department to which the resource belongs can be 1 cost center & delivery organization (service organization)

You may require to consider a 1:1 relationship between cost center & Delivery Organization (Service Organization) to establish the correct cost & price for the same combination.

Nitin
