Having had some painful experiences with number ranges in relation to some expert config items (actually around material number ranges - but there was a knock on impact into all transactional documents) and some 'accidental' transports by SAP causing major production disruption, I would recommend to only think about going non-standard in this area if there is a really compelling business reason.
